Storage Unit Inventory App, Plus a Free Printable List
Published · 4 min read
A storage unit inventory app is for the room you rent by the month: the one with identical cartons, a roll-up door and a lock whose code you must not write on the unit. Hoardo does that job for free. The unit becomes a room, every carton a numbered box, and a search on your phone tells you which box holds the tent without a Saturday spent unpacking.
If you want the short version of home storage, the guide for real people is the habit. This page is the same habit aimed at a rented unit, including a free storage unit inventory list you can print.
How to keep track of what is in a storage unit
- Treat the unit as one room. In Hoardo, make a room named after the unit ("B14", "Gate 3, unit 12"). If you have two units, make two rooms.
- Give every real box a number. Write it on the carton, then add that number in Hoardo. The name can wait ("Christmas", "Camping"). An unnamed box still shows as "#12".
- List what goes in. Type it, say it, or scan the open box with a photo before you tape it shut.
- Note the place. "Left wall, second stack" saves you shifting four towers for one carton.
- Print a QR label and stick it on the end that faces the aisle. Point the camera at it next visit and the list opens.
- Search from the car park. You do not need to remember which stack. Hoardo does.
Set the fullness so a packed carton looks packed. When you pull something out, take it off the list, or tick it onto a packing list if it is coming home for a season.
A free storage unit inventory list (printable template)
Walk the unit with this list. Tick what you actually have, leave the rest blank, then make a numbered box in Hoardo for each tick. It is a paper start, not a second system. Hoardo is the list you search later.
Tick it, print it, then make the same boxes in Hoardo.
Seasonal and holidays

Clothes and linen
Kitchen overflow
Documents, photos, media
Sports and hobbies
Furniture and leftovers
The unit itself
Print it, take it to the unit, and copy the ticks into Hoardo the same day, while the boxes are still in front of you.
What belongs in a storage unit inventory (and what does not)
Catalogue the boxes you would hate to open by mistake: seasonal decorations, camping, off-season clothes, kitchen overflow, documents in plastic, sports gear. Skip the bag of tangled hangers.
Put documents in a plastic box, not cardboard. Note that they exist. Do not write account numbers or lock codes in the list you print and carry.
Things you plan to sell can sit on a selling list in Hoardo. The public page shows the sale, never the unit number.
Why a spreadsheet fails in a corridor of boxes
A sheet in Drive is fine until you are standing in the unit with dusty hands. It has no QR label, no photo of the carton, no search that names the box. Phone notes scatter. The roundup of home storage apps is blunt about the rest.
Hoardo is a home inventory app built for this shape: rooms, numbered boxes, photos, labels, search. Items and users, no paid plan.
Free for every carton in the unit
Hoardo is free, with rooms, boxes, items and users, and one photo per item. A second unit does not cost extra. Image and voice recognition and the AI chat assistant are included. For the habit without the rented door, see storage organization for real people.
