# Moving Sale: How to Sell What You Won't Move

> A moving sale is a garage sale with a deadline. Sort keep / sell / donate first, list sell items in Hoardo, then pack keepers in numbered boxes with QR labels so you can find them after the move.

A moving sale is a garage sale with a deadline. You're not thinning a cupboard. You're deciding, before the boxes are taped, what will not get in the truck. Price it, sell it, donate the rest, and put what you *are* moving into numbered boxes you can find after the unpack.

The mix of local listings and how-to pages for "moving sale" is noisy. This page is the how-to: keep or sell first, then pack. Hoardo holds both halves.

*One garage in Hoardo: a Garage sale box for what won't move, plus Donate and Keep.*

## Decide keep or sell before you pack

Packing first and "we'll sell whatever's left" is how you pay to move a bread maker you haven't used in four years. Walk each room with three boxes in [Hoardo](https://www.hoardo.com/):

- **Keep.** Numbered boxes that will actually go on the truck.
- **Garage sale** (or "Moving sale"). Everything that can leave now.
- **Donate.** The stuff a sale won't move in time.

No fourth pile. "Maybe" is keep or sell. If you can't decide in 20 seconds, it sells.

List sell items as you touch them: **AI Speech scan** is fastest, **AI Image scan** for one thing at a time (one photo per item), or type it. Put an asking price on each sell item. Export the room as a CSV price sheet so the till isn't a stack of stickers.

*AI Speech scan: say what isn't coming with you and Hoardo writes the items.*

The [garage sale pricing chart](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/how-to-price-garage-sale-items) still applies. On a moving sale you can sit at the low end of each range. A deadline is a discount.

## What a moving sale is for (and what it isn't)

**Good on a driveway:** furniture that won't fit, duplicates, kids' stuff they've outgrown, working kitchen kit, bikes, tools, complete games. Price from the chart, take cash, be home anyway because you're packing.

**Better elsewhere:** anything that recently sold on eBay for more than about $40, sealed collectibles, instruments, designer bags. Those want Marketplace, OfferUp, Mercari or eBay, and they need photos and a week. Start them before you book the van.

**Donate, don't sell:** stained clothes, incomplete sets, TVs older than your last two phones, manuals for things you no longer own. A moving sale that looks like a dump gets fewer cars.

If the house is someone else's (an estate), the same three boxes work. Pricing can sit higher on furniture and china, and you'll want a second person on the till. This is not a full estate-sale firm. It's a way to not pack what the family doesn't want. For the how-to of a regular sale, use the [garage sale checklist](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/how-to-have-a-garage-sale).

## Pack the keepers like you mean to find them

The items you keep go straight into Hoardo boxes with QR labels. That is the whole moving trick: the box number on the carton is the same number in the app.

1. Give every keep box a number. Write it on the carton.
2. List what's inside while you pack (speech is good when your hands are full).
3. Note the room it should land in at the new place ("Kitchen, left of the window" is enough).
4. Open **Prints** in the room menu, print a QR label, stick it on the end that faces out in the truck.
5. At the new house, scan the label instead of opening seven identical cartons for the kettle.

*The Prints screen in Hoardo: pick a sticker sheet, then print a QR label for every keep box.*

This is the same habit as a [barcode inventory system for home boxes](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/barcode-inventory-system): the QR code means "this box", and the list tells you what's in it. If some keepers are going into a rented unit for a while, treat that unit as a room. The [storage unit inventory app](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/storage-unit-inventory-app) page has a printable list for a corridor of cartons.

*A rented unit as a room in Hoardo: every carton numbered, with how full it is. Same habit as the keep boxes on the truck.*

There's a longer packing-only version in [moving made easy](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/moving-made-easy). This page is the fork: sell first, then pack.

## Moving sale tips that actually save a day

- **One weekend, not three.** A moving sale that drags becomes a second move.
- **Furniture priced and photographed on Monday** if you need Marketplace time. Driveway for the rest on Saturday.
- **Share the Hoardo room** with whoever is on the till so they can search a price.
- **Last hour, half off.** Then donate. Do not load leftovers onto the truck "just in case".
- **Export the CSV** before sale day so you have a paper copy if the phone dies.
