# Free Inventory Management at Home: Rooms, Boxes and Items, No Paid Plan

> Free inventory management at home needs three levels: rooms, numbered boxes and the items inside. List them in Hoardo, label each box and search instead of digging. Every box and item is free, with no paid plan.

Free inventory management sounds like something a warehouse manager argues about with a software vendor. At home it's much simpler. You want to know what you own, which box it's in, and where that box lives. You don't want a subscription for that.

This guide shows how to run home inventory management for free, from the first box to the day you actually find the tent on the first try.

## What Free Inventory Management Means at Home

Businesses manage inventory to count stock, reorder it and sell it. You're not selling your Christmas lights. You just want them back every December.

So for a household, free inventory management comes down to three questions:

- **What do I have?** A list of the things you've stored.
- **Where is it?** The box, and the room that box is in.
- **Can I find it fast?** A search that answers in seconds, from your phone, while you're standing in the garage.

Anything beyond that is optional. Purchase orders, barcodes on every sock and supplier lists belong in a warehouse.

## The Free Setup: Rooms, Boxes, Items

The system that works is boring on purpose. Three levels, no more.

### 1. Rooms

Start with the places where stuff hides: basement, garage, attic, the storage unit across town, your parents' spare room. In Hoardo each of these is a room.

### 2. Boxes

Inside every room are boxes. Number them. Honestly, that's most of the system. "Box 12" is easier to find than "Misc kitchen stuff (2)". If a shelf, a crate or the chest freezer holds things, it counts as a box too.

### 3. Items

Then say what's in each box. Type it in, say it out loud while you pack, or snap a photo and let Hoardo's AI write the list (it even counts the four identical mugs as one item with a quantity of four). You don't need to log every paperclip. "Phone chargers (5)" is a perfectly good item.

## Label Every Box (Free, Too)

Digital lists are great, but you still need to know which physical box is Box 12. Print a QR label for each box on plain paper or on standard A4 sticker sheets. Scan the label with your phone camera and the box opens in Hoardo, so you can see what's inside without lifting the lid.

Labels are where most home systems fall apart. A number on the box plus a list in your pocket fixes that.

## Search Instead of Digging

The whole point of free inventory management is the moment you need something. Type "tent" and Hoardo tells you: Box 7, attic. It searches every box in every room at once, so you never have to remember where you put things. Hoardo remembers for you.

## What "Free" Should Actually Mean

Plenty of apps call themselves free and then stop you at 100 items, one user or no exports. We tested a few of those in our roundup of [the 5 best free inventory management apps](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/5-best-free-inventory-management-apps), and most of them had a catch.

A free inventory management app for home use should give you:

- **Every box and item included.** There's no paid tier.
- **Every feature, with no paid tier.** No "pro" plan waiting behind the useful bits.
- **Sharing.** Your partner or roommates should see the same boxes.
- **Export.** Your list is yours. You should be able to take it with you as a CSV file whenever you like.

Hoardo ticks all four. There's no billing page because there's nothing to bill.

## A Weekend Plan

You don't have to inventory the whole house at once. Try this instead:

1. **Pick one room.** The garage is a classic.
2. **Number the boxes** that are already there, and add them to Hoardo.
3. **List what's inside** each box as you go. Five minutes per box is plenty.
4. **Print and stick the labels.**
5. **Next weekend, do the next room.** Or don't. One organized room is still a win.

When something new goes into storage, add it as you put it away. A few seconds now saves an hour of digging later. If you want more habits like this, our [digital inventory management best practices](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/digital-inventory-management) go deeper.

## Spreadsheets, Notes and Other Free Options

A spreadsheet is free too, and so is the Notes app. They work until you need photos, a quick search on your phone or a label that links back to the list. We compared both: [spreadsheet vs. Hoardo](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/storage-organization-sheet-vs-hoardo) and [notes app vs. Hoardo](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/hoardo-vs-notes-app).
