# Barcode Inventory System for Home Boxes: Print QR Labels and Scan Them

> Hoardo is a barcode inventory system for boxes at home. You print a QR label for each box, stick it on, and scanning it with your phone camera opens that box so you can see what's inside without unpacking.

A barcode inventory system at home is not a warehouse gun and a pallet of SKUs. It is a code on each box, so your phone can open that box and show what is inside. Hoardo does this with QR labels you print yourself. The QR code is a two-dimensional barcode. Scanning it is the whole system.

## Print a label for every box

Give each box a number in Hoardo, list what went in, then open **Prints** in the room menu. You get a sheet of labels: each one has the QR code, the box number and the name. Print on plain paper, or on standard A4 sticker sheets from Avery, HERMA and others (the picker has 40+ layouts). Stick one on the box.

*The Prints screen: pick your sticker sheet, then print a QR label for every box in the room.*

Point your phone camera at the label. The box opens in Hoardo, with the list and photos, so you do not have to unpack it to see what is in it.

## What this barcode inventory system is not

Hoardo does not scan the 1D barcodes printed on shop products, and it does not talk to a warehouse stock system. There is no receiving dock, no SKU database and no purchase-order flow. The code on the label only means "this box". What is inside is what you typed, said or photographed.

To build that list from a picture of the open box, use the [AI photo scan for box contents](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/ai-photo-scan-box-contents). That scan looks at what is inside. This page is the label on the outside.

That is the point at home. You are not counting pallets. You are trying to find the tent without opening twelve identical cartons.

## Set it up in a weekend

1. Make a room (garage, attic, spare room).
2. Add a numbered box for each real box.
3. List what is inside: type it, say it, or snap a photo.
4. Open Prints and print the labels.
5. Stick each label on its box.

When you need something, search. When you are standing in front of a sealed box, scan the label.

## Free for every box in the house

[Hoardo](https://www.hoardo.com/) is free for all your boxes and items. Printing labels does not cost extra. For how that compares with paid inventory apps, see the [roundup of free inventory apps](https://www.hoardo.com/articles/5-best-free-inventory-management-apps).
